‘Agostino’ comes to London 22 Jan. 2020
“The arrival of De Civitate Dei at the Italian Embassy in London is the result of a very important initiative of cultural diplomacy.
The Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism and the State Library of Santa Scolastica granted the loan with generosity and far-sighted enthusiasm.
The coming of the volume to London celebrates the conclusion of a two-year project on Subiaco's collection of incunabula, the result of the international collaboration between Italy and the United Kingdom, generously funded by the Polonsky Foundation. It is a pleasure for us to acknowledge and support this kind of collaboration, which is fundamental for the preservation and wider communication of Italian collections”.

A video illustrating the birth of typographic art at the Monastery of St. Scholastica in Subiaco, following the arrival from Germany of the two clerics Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz, who printed the first Italian incunabula between 1464 and 1467.

The Transmission of knowledge – from manuscript to print

A video-story that illustrates the transmission of knowledge by analysing the passage from the manuscript to the printed book, with a focus on the edition of De Civitate Dei by St Augustine printed in Subiaco in 1467, and still preserved at Santa Scolastica together with the manuscript the printers used as their model.
